Inserting the Template Name Dynamically in a Document

Summary: Document templates are an integral part of Word, whether the user realizes it or not. You can use one of Word's fields to dynamically add the name of the current template anywhere within the text of the document.

Every Word document has a template attached to it. This template defines things such as your macros and styles (among other things). If you do not explicitly attach a template to your document, then Word uses the Normal.dotm template.

The name of the template file associated with your document can be inserted into your document and updated automatically. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Position the insertion point where you want the template file name to appear.
  2. On the Insert tab of the Ribbon, click the Quick Parts option in the Text group. Word displays a drop-down list of items you can insert.
  3. Choose Field from the list of items. Word displays the Field dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  4. In the Categories drop-down list, choose Document Information.
  5. In the Field Names list choose Template.
  6. Click on OK to close the dialog box and insert your field.
