Using the EditTime Field

Summary: Word keeps track of the cumulative time that you have a document open. This is considered the editing time for the document, and can be inserted dynamically in your text by using a field.

Word keeps track of how long you work with a file. You can see this information on the Statistics tab of the Properties dialog box, which is visible when you click the Office button, choose Prepare, and then click Properties. As far as Word is concerned, the cumulative time you have the file open is considered the editing time for the document. You can insert this time, in minutes, in your document by using the following steps:

  1. Position the insertion point where you want the editing time inserted.
  2. Click the Insert tab and then choose Quick Parts | Field from the Text group of the Ribbon. You will see the Field dialog box. (Click here to see a related figure.)
  3. Choose Date and Time from the Categories list.
  4. Select EditTime from the list of available fields.
  5. Click on OK.
